Nine question types for school CBT exams

A good test asks each question in the format that fits the skill. Egold CBT supports multiple choice, select all that apply, true/false, fill in the blank, several blanks, number answers, matching, put in order and theory. Eight of the nine are marked automatically, with part marks where a student gets some of it right.

1

Multiple choice

Use it for
Timed subject tests that cover many topics in one sitting, such as a Basic Science or Government class test.
What students do
Pick one option. Options can be shuffled for each student.
How it is marked
Marked automatically.

Example

What is the chemical formula of sulphuric acid?

A. H₂SO₄   B. HCl   C. HNO₃   D. H₂CO₃

2

Select all that apply

Use it for
Questions with more than one right answer, where guessing one option should not be enough: "Which of these are noble gases?"
What students do
Tick every correct option.
How it is marked
Part marks: each correct tick earns a share, each wrong tick takes one away, so ticking everything never pays. Can be set to all-or-nothing.
A select-all-that-apply question about noble gases

3

True or false

Use it for
Quick checks at the end of a lesson: facts, definitions, and common misconceptions.
What students do
Choose True or False.
How it is marked
Marked automatically.

Example

An acid turns blue litmus paper red.

○ True   ○ False

4

Fill in the blank

Use it for
Short recall without the clue that options give: a key term, a capital city, a date or a formula.
What students do
Type a word or short phrase.
How it is marked
Marked automatically against every accepted answer you list, such as "Abuja" or "FCT". Capital letters and extra spaces are ignored.

Example

A solid that changes directly into a gas without melting undergoes ________.

5

Several blanks (cloze)

Use it for
Definitions and processes where several terms belong together: "the positive electrode is the [1] and the negative electrode is the [2]".
What students do
Type into each box inside the sentence.
How it is marked
Each blank is marked on its own, with accepted alternatives, and earns its share of the marks.
A question with two blanks in one sentence about electrolysis

6

Number answer

Use it for
Calculations in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Commerce: profit percentages, molar masses, speed, simple interest.
What students do
Type a number. A unit such as %, cm or ₦ can be shown beside the box.
How it is marked
Marked automatically. 2,500 and 2500 are the same; 0.75 and 3/4 are the same. You can allow a small margin for rounding, e.g. ±0.5.

Example

A trader buys a radio for ₦8,000 and sells it for ₦10,000. Find the percentage profit.

[ 25 ] %

7

Matching

Use it for
Pairs that test understanding of relationships: states and capitals, separation methods, authors and books, terms and definitions.
What students do
Choose a match for each item from a list. You can add extra wrong choices so the last pair is not a giveaway.
How it is marked
Part marks for each correct pair. Can be set to all-or-nothing.
A matching question: mixtures matched to separation methods

8

Put in order

Use it for
Sequences and processes: stages of digestion, steps of a calculation, events in history, the order of elements.
What students do
Move items up and down until the order is right.
How it is marked
Part marks for each item in its correct position.
A put-in-order question: elements in order of atomic number

9

Theory / essay

Use it for
Explanations, show-your-working Mathematics, letters, essays and anything that needs a teacher's judgement.
What students do
Write an answer in a text box.
How it is marked
Marked by the teacher in the Grading screen, with your model answer beside it. AI can suggest a mark and feedback; the teacher decides.
